Linked to a potential arrival at PSG for several years, Zinedine Zidane was close to becoming the national team coach. Here’s why he declined.

Algeria made a strong push. After the departure of coach Djamel Belmadi, the country attempted to recruit Hervé Renard, the current coach of the French women’s national team. Zinedine Zidane was also on their radar. Representatives from the Algerian Football Federation met with Alain Migliaccio, Zizou’s agent, according to RMC.

The response was swift: it’s a no. “Discussions came to a halt quite quickly due to Zidane’s polite refusal to take on this Algerian challenge, even though some members of his family may have been enticed by the idea,” explains RMC Sport.

Algeria is now exploring other options: Julen Lopetegui, former coach of Spain and currently available since leaving Wolverhampton, is on the shortlist.
