Deco, the sporting director of FC Barcelona, gives an update on the search for the new coach, who will succeed Xavi.
Xavi will leave at the end of the season. Barcelona was completely surprised by this decision. President Joan Laporta had only been informed a few minutes before the Spanish coach’s decision. Since then, the Spanish press has been searching for a successor. And so is Barcelona.
Sporting director Deco discussed the matter in the AS newspaper. José Mourinho? He has the advantage of being available after being sacked by Roma. “He is a friend, but I haven’t spoken to him in a while,” admitted Deco.
Pep Guardiola? “He is a great coach. Perhaps the best in history.” Thiago Motta? “I haven’t seen many Bologna games. Yes, he is doing a good job, but I haven’t spoken to him in many years.”
Rafa Marquez? “He is doing his job and growing as a coach in the reserve team. He is not considered a future coach.”
But Deco mentions the typical profile of the next coach: “the same as the one we currently have. That he adapts to the club’s style, to the young players, to the players in the squad because there will be no big signings, that he is aware of what Barcelona can do today. He must come knowing the reality, what we can do and where we are going.”
