The Spanish justice system fears the worst for Dani Alves: the Brazilian accused of rape has been placed on an anti-suicide watch.

Imprisoned since January 2023 following allegations of sexual assault in late December 2022 in a nightclub restroom, Daniel Alves is awaiting the verdict of his trial. His cellmate, interviewed by Spanish television, asserts that he is experiencing profound psychological distress.

“Since the start of the trial, he has been battling depression. He appears depressed, demoralized. Educators and prison staff are providing him with support. An anti-suicide protocol was initiated upon his return from court, out of concern that he may attempt self-harm or desperate acts,” said the Brazilian defender’s fellow inmate.

It is noteworthy that the former FC Barcelona player faces a potential sentence of up to nine years of imprisonment.
